Star Wars: The Old Republic grace period
Heh, so I thought I could do a mini rant here about a lie by Stephen Reid about the grace period.
See, I don’t fall for the “Head of customer relations doesn’t know about grace period” gag. Doesn’t make sense, he had to know or he’s definitely a bad employee. So what’s the issue, you ask? In a post in August he stated, no ambiguity, that there was a grace period where people could play temporarily while they wait for their physical game box to arrive.
As of today, grace period is no more! Those people who bought physical editions won’t be able to play after the 20th December until their boxes arrive (providing they get to play prior to the 20th December at all). Ah, the rage was tremendous – roughly two pages of posts every 30 seconds, it hit 4000 posts in about an hour and a half.
Of course, there were the defenders who tried deflecting the blame to EA, and others who deflected the blame to Bioware, and even others who said there were no lies and things change. Since this is the XD Project where we are right and the world is wrong I’m going to go ahead and state categorically that those people are morons. That is all.
Car Stereos.
I was recently tasked with sourcing a car stereo upgrade for one of the admin on here (hint, NOT the one with the WRX), and so began an afternoon of researching speakers and amps.
It occurred to me part way through my research that I always end up having to try match sound systems to an already purchased set of speakers. It makes for an interesting challenge, trying to source the rest of the gear to match the already installed speakers. When I had a Supra, I had to match an amp and sub to work with the JL Audio components I had in the front, I couldn’t get an amp that would over power the fronts – but under power a 10in sub, and likewise find a 10in sub that had the right RMS to suit an amp that would suit the components. Quite a lot of running around in circles, but eventually I did it, got it all installed, and it sounded fantastic.
With this setup, I had an already in place set of rear speakers to work with. The end result has to be front components, rear splits, and 6x9s in the rear shelf. See the problem? Yup, six speakers. Now, the head unit is obviously only a four channel (2x front, 2x back, or sub), and it’s bloody expensive to get a six channel amp – or a 4x and a 2x. So, that left running the back speakers in parallel or series. That flung up a whole load of problems, mainly relating to ohmage of speakers and amps. Read the rest of this entry »
NaNoWriMo 2011 preparations
That time of year where the authors of The XD Project take up their authors keyboards and battle toward a 50K mark is approaching yet again. There are 3 months left until we start our … no, I’m not going to say that. “Creative juices” always sounds kind of like a toddler eating paint to me. Rather, I prefer to express it as “write our flamin’ giblets out”.
Last years novel was an absolutely epic success, the only thing I failed to insert which I will remedy this year is “Wizards on motorcycles”. I’m caught between two ideas this year though, one is to have my massively over-powered main character fight in the brewing war, and the other is to fulfil another life-long ambition. You see, two years ago at a bookfest I picked up a book I thought looked interesting – it was called “Warlock”. I thought “Hmmm, two inches thick, someone wanted to really write an epic about a warlock” then I turned it over and read the back. What nonsense and drivel is this? The warlock wanted to save the world?
My second idea is to write about my main character AND a warlock from the opposition, both tasked by their gods toward the destruction of each other. Just what everyone wants, a massive cataclysm between overpowered opponents. This gon’ be a good book, y’all, y’all gonna wanna read this book. K, thanks, bye.
I’ve also been thinking – normally while I write Nano it’s a bit, well, if you think Pride and Prejudice is an action movie then I guess you could call my Nano’s exciting but for the rest of the world – it’s more like watching golf. To alleviate said tedium I think this year I’ll pick a bunch of places to write and then drive there and write my novel in that setting.
Sudden thought – since the other XD Project authors fail at writing I should force them to collectively write a 50K story on this website during November and threaten to remove administrator access upon failure – as we all know, disincentive is far better motivation than reward. I seem to remember when this site started we wrote a few posts about a story Dan and I were planning to write with collaborative input from the other editors. I wonder what happened to that…too much planning, not enough action I think. I can’t really remember the plot now either, something about a ranger, a trainee ranger, something else and maybe a volcano. Ah yes, I drew a map which subsequently had the question asked about it “Did someone sit a toddler down and photocopy the result?” Upon that fantastic evaluation of my abilities I bought proper map-rendering software last year for my epic novel and I think it turned out much better.
I think all I’m trying to say is I should probably write a plot soon.
EA/Bioware Star Wars: The Old Republic Australian launch
I owe it to myself to post these thoughts on the failed release of Star Wars: The Old Republic in Australia. The story starts back in 2008 when caffeine_addict linked me to a new Star Wars game that was coming out. I remember being disappointed that it was an MMO because generally the players in MMO’s ruin the game experience but I started following the game. I was pretty excited for it for two years and then as the release date kept getting pushed back and more programming teams were thrown at it I gradually realised that the game was probably quite badly designed.
I watched the community a little bit, I enjoyed the fact that many mature players seemed to be frequenting the forums and many of SW:TOR’s potential player-base were new to MMORPG’s. As a current WoW player nothing annoys me quite as much as immaturity. A bit of fun is good, but older players seem to understand human relations a lot better and are much easier to get on with over a longer period of time. Also, they’re less likely to say things like “WTF NUB LRN2PLAY WHERS MY HEALZ??? IM UR GUILDIE LET TANK DIE SAVE ME I HATE YOU /Guild Quit”
Anyway, It’s July 2011, and I’ve been watching SW:TOR for three years and they aren’t going to release it in Australia. At least, they have no plans at this stage. Some might say “burned”.
iPad 2 release date
Well it looks as if we shall be seeing the iPad in Australia as of the 25th March. On recommendation from one of this site’s administrators I held off on the purchase of v.1 as it was a “gimmick” but I think the time has come to own me one of those little tablets of awesome. I’m still talking about iPad’s in case you’re wondering.
Absolutely none of the features are better except I think the hardware has been improved somewhat. Anyway, I don’t care about features, the point is to own one, because Read the rest of this entry »
